FIRE-K FIVE-K, Inc is a 501-c3, non-profit charity that seeks to raise funds for firefighters and their immediate family members who are battling cancer.
From 2002-2016, 61% of firefighter deaths were directly attributable to Cancer. This figure is a full 20% above the National average.
Because of this, FIRE-K FIVE-K is about supporting the individual firefighters who find themselves battling Cancer, providing them access to EARLY, preemptive cancer screenings as recommended by the IAFC, and connecting Firefighters with the resources they need to combat the epidemic of firefighter occupational cancer.
We do this by hosting a 5-kilometer run EVERY year that anyone can participate in.
As a subcategory of our run, firefighters are welcome to compete by running in gear for a bragging rights trophy and a team/individual prize.
(While they cannot be guaranteed, prizes are often handed out to top placing runners in the other categories as well!)
The event itself consists of the run, bouncy houses and displays for the kids, a live DJ, lots of fire apparatus, and of course, food and fun!!
At the conclusion of the event, all proceeds above the events operating budget are dispersed to firefighters or family members of firefighters who are battling cancer. We know that this doesn't resolve a family member or provider having cancer, but the hope is that it alleviates some of the stress of the financial difficulties they face.
Any firefighter or immediate family of firefighters may be NOMINATED. An independent panel of firefighters from local departments decides the order in which nominees are assisted.
So far, FIRE-K FIVE-K has assisted firefighter families with more than $20,000 in assistance, and we hope that number continues to grow!!
